Auditions

South City will hold auditions for this hysterical southern comedy by the team who gave us the Golden Girls on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at the theatre: 2969 Pelham Parkway, Pelham, Al.

Directed by Rachael Pike Upton. The cast consists of 5 females, some of who play multiple roles. Characters are aged from late 40s thru 70s.

Fanny and Willa— the Wild sisters of Winedale, Virginia, — and their frustratingly quirky sister-in-law Johnnie Faye, are already accustomed to supporting one another through thick and thin, but they really need each other now. Fanny is experiencing a hilariously inappropriate reaction to her 60th birthday, while Willa is so stressed out from her nursing job that she resorts to vodka and speed-knitting to cope. Johnnie Faye, determined to put her year of fraught widowhood behind her, is desperately trying to find a man—preferably a man with a house, since hers is somewhere at the bottom of a Florida sinkhole. With equal doses of hilarity and heart, these extraordinary women come up with delightful and surprisingly unorthodox ways to clear the clutter from their lives, their homes and their relationships so they can move on. Together they prove it’s never too late to take another one of life’s paths for a grand new adventure! For more information, contact info@southcitytheatre.com

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after an attempted singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach because she didn’t like his looks. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. Warm-hearted, irreverent, and imaginative, Crimes of the Heart teems with humanity. The question remains though, can you ever escape the past to seize the future?

This production is directed by Pat Yates and stars Lori Mercer, Jennifer Spiegelman, Megan Pecot, Autumn Brown, Carter Crane, and Brennan Martigoni.  The production staff includes Jess Smyly, Mike Gerrells, Clark French, Rachael Upton, and Destiny Clark.

Announcing Auditions for Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors

Audition Call For:
Dracula A Comedy of Terrors by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen
Directed by Dan Strickland

In the treacherous mountains of Transylvania, a meek English real estate agent takes a harrowing journey to meet a new and mysterious client, who also just happens to be the most terrifying and ferocious monster the world has ever known: Count Dracula! Famed female vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing and company then chase Dracula from Transylvania to the British countryside to London and back.

This show is filled with clever wordplay and anything-goes pop culture references, it’s a quick-changing, laugh-out-loud re-imagining of the Gothic classic. Actors (except Dracula) are called on to play multiple roles.

Auditions will consist of reading from the script and possibly some improve.
Location – South City Theatre, 2969 Pelham Parkway, AL
Sunday 8/20 starting at 2:00 PM.
Monday 8/21 starting at 6:30 PM

Show Dates:
10/20-21 at 7:30, 10/22 at 2:00, and 10/27-28 at 7:30 at South City Theatre.

***Bring your calendar with all your conflicts 8/28 – 10/29 to the audition.***

Rehearsal:
Begin the 9/5, with a possible read thru the week before. My intention is to rehearse 3 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday or Sunday afternoon) until tech week. If this works and what days will depend on the cast’s conflicts. I’m flexible.

Looking for three men and two women, 18 and older. There is physical comedy, so the physical ability to do that sort of thing will be a factor. British accents (RP and cockney), eastern European accent (Dracula), German (Van Helsing) and others (Irish, Scottish, Pirate) are a plus (even bad ones). Depending on the turnout I may cast a sixth actor (M or F) for some of the bit parts but rapidly changing between roles is part of the comedy and fun of this show. I also NEED an Assistant Director/Stage Manager/stage hand who may also perform a few special effects on stage.

ROLES

  • Actor One(M): Harker(timid) / Suitors / Bosun / Gravedigger
  • Actor Two(M): Dr. Westfeldt(blowhard) / Renfield(insane) / Captain
  • Actor Three(F): Lucy(brilliant &plucky) / Kitty(dotty kleptomaniac maid) / Driver
  • Actor Four(F): Mina(less than Lucy) / Van Helsing(brilliant, sturdy, serious)
  • Actor Five(M): Dracula(sexy rock star)
  • Assistant Director/Stage Manager/stage hand/special effects

Auditions for Panache

South City Theatre will be hosting auditions for Don Gordon’s Panache. The production is directed by Clay Boyce.

Auditions will be held at the theatre on February 4, 2023, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, and February 5, 2023, from 11:00 – 1:00 PM.

What could possibly have motivated Kathleen Trafalgar to get into her Mercedes SL 450 one afternoon and drive to the inner city to track down a rough-edged, hard-drinking, fry cook named Harry Baldwin? A six by twelve-inch piece of tin issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles to anyone who pays the fee. It seems they both applied for exactly the same personalized license plate – PANACHE. Kathleen is married to a man she regards as a dashing, eloquent, Renaissance Man personified, and she wants to put it on his Bentley. Harry already has the plate on his Ford truck. For both of them this seven letter word holds special meaning. The play becomes an intellectual battle ultimately exposing the irrelevance of social status and the needs of two lonely people – an unusual love story.

All roles are available (character descriptions below). Sides are attached below.

Harry Baldwin – an artist who works nights as a fry cook, can be played anywhere from 40 – early 50s.

Kathleen Trafalgar – chic, wealthy, attractive, cultured, fashionable dresser, perfect manners, can be late 30s – late 40s.

Irwin Alcott – clean cut, fragile, scholarly, age 20.

Laura – poised, soft-spoken, her beauty is equal parts innocence and sensuality, about age 24.

Jumbo Dombroski – a large, intimidating man – tattoos, muscular, dresses and acts as if he owns the street, 40s – 60s.

Performance dates are April 14-16, 2023 and April 20-22, 2023.

Auditions–Elvis People

Auditions will be held on December 12 and 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 at South City Theatre. Need men and women, ages 18 to 80. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.  Directed by Lisa Ponder and Donna Williamson. Performance dates are February 3-17, 2023.

In a series of vignettes and monologues, you’ll meet a variety of Elvis fans, worshipers and detractors, such as: an Elvis impersonator who rises from near obscurity to almost-fame, a family torn apart by the daughter’s love of Elvis, a daughter who shoulders her elderly mother through one last trip to Graceland, a couple who almost get an amazing present from Elvis until they comically ruin their own good fortune, and a Vietnam vet who makes it through a traumatic episode with the help of Elvis. You’ll see how a button torn from Elvis’ shirt comes between a young couple in hilarious and complicated ways, how a snapshot of Elvis brings on a marital crisis, and how a recovered filling from Elvis’ teeth leads to memorabilia collectors debating the meaning of faith … sort of. The play explores a wide range of characters and uses a variety of approaches—from comic to tragic, from realistic to presentational to farce, from scenes to monologues. Elvis, as a character, does not appear in the play, but his spirit infuses the play as it explores the profound impact that Elvis has had on millions of people and on the culture of America. And ultimately, the play explores not just the phenomenon of Elvis Presley but also broader aspects of modern culture, such as celebrity worship and fan obsession.  .
