Covering Dish by David Garrett. Covering Dish hasn’t been performed in the area in over 20 years. South City Theatre is proud to bring this gem back to the stage. The death of Great Aunt Eula Mae has thrown the five Dish sisters into a tizzy. Who stole the two-carat diamond ring that Aunt Eula Mae promised to each of them? Does it have anything to do with the son who recently got out of prison? If you can’t trust your family, who can you trust? The show opens in August and is directed by Donna Williamson.

The War of the Worlds: The 1938 Radio Script, based on the novel by H.G. Wells and written by Howard E. Koch. The show that changed radio and made Orson Welles a household name. Originally broadcast on CBS Radio on October 30, 1938, this vivid – and often terrifying — description of a Martian invasion of Earth panicked radio listeners throughout the northeast United States. This stage adaptation uses the original script that Welles used for his Mercury Radio Theatre of the Air. The show opens in October and is directed by Amanda Crist.

A Doublewide Texas Christmas by Jamie Wooten, Jessie Jones and Nicholas Hope. Somewhere in the Texas heartland, lies the brand new town of Doublewide – Population, 10. It’s Christmas time, and it’s beginning to look a lot like trouble. Doublewide is being double crossed by the county and might lose their status as a town. Maybe if they win the countywide “Battle of The Mangers,” their Christmas will be saved. The show opens in December and is directed by Mary Ann Garrett

God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. First published in 2008, the play involves two sets of parents; the son of one couple has hurt the son of the other couple at a public park. The parents meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish and the meeting devolves into chaos. The show opens in February. This production is directed by Pat Yates and has already been cast.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield. All 37 Plays in 97 Minutes! An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was London’s longest-running comedy having clocked a very palpable nine years in London’s West End at the Criterion Theatre! Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies in one wild ride that will leave you breathless and helpless with laughter. The show opens in April and is directed by Victoria Boyce.

Laughter on the 23rd Floor by Neil Simon. The play focuses on Max Prince, the star of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953, and his staff, including Simon’s alter-ego Lucas Brickman, who maintains a running commentary on the writing, fighting, and wacky antics which take place in the writers’ room. Max has an ongoing battle with NBC executives, who fear his humor is too sophisticated for Middle America.. The show opens in June and is directed by Clay Boyce.

In addition to our six mainstage shows, we will have several special events.
First up is a partnership with The Pelham BEAT in September, A Reunion To Die For by Jack Pachuta. Tickets for this event will be available via The Pelham BEAT. CATFISH MOON

Catfish Moon: A play about brotherhood, romance, and life

The old fishing pier out on the end of Cypress Lake has just fallen under the magic of another Catfish Moon. It was the favorite hangout for three best friends when they were kids—skipping school, skinny dipping and even experiencing the mysteries of kissing girls. Now Curley, Gordon and Frog are older, and they have tasted the bitterness of life as well as the sweetness, and the pressures and problems that come with middle age have eroded the closeness between Frog and Gordon. The final straw comes when Frog discovers that Gordon is dating his ex-wife. Curley, the “big brother” of the bunch, in an attempt to recapture the friendship and settle all disputes, convinces Frog and Gordon to go on an overnight fishing trip like old times. On the pier, the weight of adulthood is lifted by laughter and their love of fishing, and the three guys discover that their friendship was never really lost. However, in the midst of catching the biggest fish of all time, life brings them back to a painful reality. The poignant resolution of the play brings Gordon and Frog to the realization that life is too precious and too short to let true friendship get away.

This production is directed by Clay Boyce and stars David Coker, Steven Ross, Michael Wilbanks, and Robin Rowe Wallace. The production team includes – Patrice Headington, Mike Oakes, and Andy Johnson.

Auditions

South City will hold auditions for this hysterical southern comedy by the team who gave us the Golden Girls on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at the theatre: 2969 Pelham Parkway, Pelham, Al.

Directed by Rachael Pike Upton. The cast consists of 5 females, some of who play multiple roles. Characters are aged from late 40s thru 70s.

Fanny and Willa— the Wild sisters of Winedale, Virginia, — and their frustratingly quirky sister-in-law Johnnie Faye, are already accustomed to supporting one another through thick and thin, but they really need each other now. Fanny is experiencing a hilariously inappropriate reaction to her 60th birthday, while Willa is so stressed out from her nursing job that she resorts to vodka and speed-knitting to cope. Johnnie Faye, determined to put her year of fraught widowhood behind her, is desperately trying to find a man—preferably a man with a house, since hers is somewhere at the bottom of a Florida sinkhole. With equal doses of hilarity and heart, these extraordinary women come up with delightful and surprisingly unorthodox ways to clear the clutter from their lives, their homes and their relationships so they can move on. Together they prove it’s never too late to take another one of life’s paths for a grand new adventure! For more information, contact info@southcitytheatre.com

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after an attempted singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach because she didn’t like his looks. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. Warm-hearted, irreverent, and imaginative, Crimes of the Heart teems with humanity. The question remains though, can you ever escape the past to seize the future?

This production is directed by Pat Yates and stars Lori Mercer, Jennifer Spiegelman, Megan Pecot, Autumn Brown, Carter Crane, and Brennan Martigoni.  The production staff includes Jess Smyly, Mike Gerrells, Clark French, Rachael Upton, and Destiny Clark.
